Origins of Pepe
Pepe, created in 2005 by artist Matt Furie, is a cartoon frog that has become an immensely popular internet meme, particularly within the cryptocurrency community.
Other creations by Furie have also found popularity as memecoins, including Brett (BRETT), Andy (ANDY), and Landwolf (WOLF).
During the 2016 US presidential election, Pepe imagery gained traction among alt-right groups, leading to controversy surrounding what Furie describes as a "peaceful frog-dude."
In 2019, Furie initiated a lawsuit against Infowars and its creator, Alex Jones, for using the character in Infowars' political content.
According to the Anti-Defamation League, an organization dedicated to combating hate speech, "the majority of uses of Pepe the Frog have been, and continue to be, non-bigoted."
