Cryptocurrency-Friendly SEC Commissioner Views Meme Coins
SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, known as "Crypto Mom," recently opined that many existing meme coins do not fall under the agency's purview.
"We always have to look at facts and circumstances, but many of the meme coins that are out there probably do not have a home in the SEC," Peirce said during an interview with Bloomberg.
She encouraged Congress and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to address this issue.
Bloomberg recently estimated that the odds of a Dogecoin ETF being approved this year stand at an impressive 75%, as the leading meme coin is likely viewed as a commodity.
Peirce also emphasized her belief in "freedom maximalism," criticizing the previous SEC leadership for hindering industry players' engagement with the agency.
"All I'm asking is that we have an innovation policy that allows people to innovate and try new things," Peirce said.
Peirce has spearheaded a cryptocurrency industry task force to establish clear rules for the industry. The SEC is also reducing cryptocurrency enforcement, with top lawyer Jorge Tenreiro being reassigned.
