The Legal Challenges Facing the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)
Established by President Donald Trump through executive order, the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has faced numerous legal challenges since Inauguration Day.
Lawsuits Filed
On January 20, Cointelegraph reported that DOGE was sued by the nonprofit National Security Counselors for allegedly violating the Federal Advisory Committee Act (FACA). The lawsuit also alleges that DOGE is not operating in accordance with transparency, ethics, and representation requirements under FACA.
Additionally, ethics watchdog Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics and consumer protection group Public Citizen have filed lawsuits against DOGE. The Center for Biological Diversity, a nonprofit membership organization, has also filed suit, seeking access to records related to DOGE's establishment.
Leadership and Objectives
During his presidential campaign, Trump expressed the intention to appoint Elon Musk to his cabinet. After winning the nomination, Trump announced that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would lead DOGE. However, Ramaswamy resigned on Inauguration Day to focus on his Ohio governor bid.
DOGE's mission is to modernize government systems and reduce inefficiencies within federal agencies, with a target cost reduction of up to $2 trillion by 2026. The department's name is a nod to the popular memecoin Dogecoin, which has been promoted by Musk as a potential future payment method.
