BitMEX Launches Meme Coin Basket Index

BitMEX, a renowned digital asset exchange, has introduced a meme coin basket index. This innovative product provides exposure to the top 10 most valuable meme cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, including Dogecoin (DOGE), Shiba Inu (SHIB), Pepe (PEPE), and dogwifhat (WIF). BitMEX touts it as the "S&P 500 for crypto meme coins."

The index is margined in Tether (USDT), with a leverage of up to 25X. Its composition is based on the market share of the included coins. DOGE, SHIB, and PEPE account for 60%, while WIF, FLOKI, and Bonk have smaller weightings.

MarketVector and the Mainstream Appeal of Meme Coins

In May 2022, MarketVector, an affiliate of VanEck, launched a similar index tracking leading meme coins. This included DOGE and SHIB, as well as lesser-known projects like FLOKI. The index marked a significant step towards legitimizing meme coins.

The meme coin craze has been a prominent force in recent bull markets. Coins such as PEPE and WIF have experienced significant price gains.

Pump.Fun's Solana Success

Pump.fun, a Solana-based meme coin factory, recently surpassed Ethereum in revenue. Over a million tokens have been created on its platform. The platform's popularity is partly attributed to the rise of Solana-based celebrity meme coins, such as those created by Iggy Azalea.
