Dogecoin (DOGE) is based on the popular internet meme “doge” and features a Shiba Inu dog as its mascot. The open-source digital currency was developed by Billy Markus of Portland, Oregon, and Jackson Palmer of Sydney, Australia, and forked from Litecoin in December 2013. Dogecoin's creators saw it as a fun and entertaining cryptocurrency that would appeal to a broader audience than Bitcoin's core audience since it is based on a dog meme. Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted several tweets on social media claiming that Dogecoin was his favorite currency.
