AI-Generated Video Raises Concerns About Misuse in Politics
A manipulated video featuring a fake voice of US Vice President Kamala Harris has sparked concerns about the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) in elections.
Musk Shares Video, Raises Alarms
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared the video on his social media platform X without indicating it was a parody. The video used visuals from a real Harris campaign ad but replaced her voice with a fake one.
Following backlash, Musk clarified that the video was a parody and defended the legality of such content in America. However, Harris campaign spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg criticized the video, stating that voters deserve accurate information.
AI-Generated Content in Politics
The video highlights the growing concern about AI-generated content being used for parody or deception in politics. Some questioned whether Musk's post violated X's policies against deceptive media, while others argued that parody is permitted.
Musk's initial post, which praised the video as "amazing," did not clarify its parody status. This, coupled with Musk's previous support for former President Donald Trump, added to the controversy.
Experts Weigh In
AI specialists confirmed that the audio in the manipulated video was generated using AI technology. Hany Farid, a digital forensics expert, noted the sophistication of the voice and its potential for deceptive use.
Rob Weissman of Public Citizen expressed concern that many viewers could be misled by the video. He called for stronger regulations on generative AI to prevent its use for deception that could undermine democracy.
